What to see at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate and when to go
Berlin, Germania

The Brandenburg Gate has no interior, no ticket and no closing time. Twelve Doric columns form five passageways, and the copper-green Quadriga of four horses and winged Victory stands on the attic above them. One room in the north gatehouse takes visitors in batches to a dozen seats, free of charge, and allows no photography.

Pariser Platz and the two gatehouses

Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) (Pariser Platz) is a fully public square with no door policy, free and open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The sandstone neoclassical gate has no interior to tour, so the only thing a visit can cost you is a guide. Walking groups and coach parties meet daily on the Pariser Platz side, where guides brief them under the columns. Stand well back on the broad paved square if you want all five passageways and the Quadriga above them in one view.

Raum der Stille im Brandenburger Tor (north gatehouse) is the one part of the gate you can walk inside. The free non-denominational silence room has run since 1994 and opens daily from 11:00 to 18:00 in summer. The room is bare: plain pale walls, a single woven wall hanging, a few rows of simple wooden chairs, no windows onto the square. Visitors enter in small batches to a dozen seats, so a large group has to split and its guide waits outside.

Berlin Tourist Info Centre at Brandenburg Gate (south gatehouse) is free, and a sensible first stop of the day. The counter sells WelcomeCard and CityTourCard passes and hands out maps and transport advice, and it opens daily from 09:00 or 10:00 until 18:00. It takes walk-ins with no booking, in a low-ceilinged room where the gate's columns show through the open doorway. The room is small, so send one or two people in for the whole party.

High views toward the Quadriga

Reichstag Building Dome (German Bundestag) (Platz der Republik) gives you the gate from above for nothing. The dome opens daily from 08:00 to midnight, with last entry at 22:00. You have to register through the Bundestag Visitors' Service, which opens three months ahead. Every name and date of birth has to be filed in advance, and staff check photo ID at the security containers on arrival. Inside, twin spiral ramps climb the inner wall of Norman Foster's glass dome around a central funnel of angled mirrors, and the roof terrace looks down Tiergarten toward the Quadriga.

Käfer Dachgarten-Restaurant im Deutschen Bundestag (Reichstag roof terrace, €€€) is the only public restaurant inside a working parliament, and your way in when the dome slots have gone. A breakfast, lunch or aperitif booking includes roof and dome access. Security works as it does for the dome: names given in advance, photo ID at the west entrance. You eat in a glass-walled room of pale timber and grey upholstery, the lit glass dome rising immediately outside the window.

Humboldt Forum Roof Terrace (Museum Island) costs €3, or €1.50 reduced. It opens 10:30 to 18:30 on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and until 20:00 on Friday. A lift makes the 1,800 square metre deck step-free, 30 metres up on a reconstructed palace facade with pale stone parapets. The panorama runs four ways, over Museum Island, the cathedral dome and the Quadriga in the distance.

Berlin Victory Column (Siegessäule) (Straße des 17. Juni) puts the gate at the end of a dead-straight axis, and it is the cheapest climb here at €4 to €4.50, cash only, no cards. There is no booking system and no lift. The 285-step spiral staircase is single-file, so send a group up in waves. Summer hours start at 09:30, and the platform sits under a gilded Victoria on a sandstone column ringed with gold cannon barrels.

Galleries and a lobby on Pariser Platz

Akademie der Künste (Pariser Platz) is 20 metres from the gate, a glass-fronted modern building wedged between historic facades, open daily from 10:00 to 20:00. A long internal bridge walkway runs through the upper floor above the galleries. At street level, the passage cuts through to Behrenstraße, the quickest way out of the Pariser Platz crush.

Stiftung Brandenburger Tor im Max Liebermann Haus (north corner of Pariser Platz) is the museum at the gate that most visitors walk past. The reconstructed cream stucco townhouse with its tall shuttered windows opens Thursday to Sunday, 11:00 to 18:00, and stairs are the only way up to the rooms. 'Liebermann's World' runs from 26 March 2026 to 17 January 2027. From the upper rooms the gate's columns fill the window.

Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin (Pariser Platz, €€€€) is the indoor vantage point on the gate, and where to sit out bad weather. The lobby lounge seats walk-ins under a coffered ceiling, with a grand piano, the dark elephant fountain at the centre of the marble floor and Pariser Platz framed through tall windows. Afternoon tea in the Bel Etage is reservation-only, Thursday to Sunday, in 90-minute sittings between 14:00 and 17:00, from €79 a head. A lobby coffee buys you the same window for less.

The memorials south and west of the gate

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (with the Ort der Information), Berlin
Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (with the Ort der Information), Berlin

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (with the Ort der Information) is one block south of the gate, and free. The field of 2,711 plain grey concrete stelae stands on undulating ground, the slabs rising above head height in the narrow sunken corridors, and there is no signage inside the field. You can walk the open ground at any hour. The underground information centre opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 20:00, with last entry at 19:15, and it is compact enough that groups are asked to arrive split and keep their voices down. Treat the whole site as a place of mourning.

Memorial to the Sinti and Roma of Europe Murdered under National Socialism (Simsonweg) is two minutes' walk from the gate, free, unrestricted at all hours and almost always empty. Dani Karavan's 2012 work is a shallow circular pool of dark water in a wooded Tiergarten clearing, with a single triangular stone set in the centre and trees closing it off from the road.

Breakfast, bad weather and late hours nearby

EINSTEIN Unter den Linden (€€) is five minutes east of the gate and opens from 08:00 on weekdays and 10:00 at weekends. The Viennese coffee-house room is long and sectioned, with dark bentwood chairs, marble-topped tables, newspapers on wooden racks and large windows onto the boulevard. The kitchen cooks Austrian food, and the coffee comes to the table instead of a paper cup on Pariser Platz.

Madame Tussauds Berlin (Unter den Linden, €€) is the nearest paid indoor attraction to the gate and the obvious move on a wet afternoon with children. Tickets cost €22 online and €29.50 at the door. It opens daily from 10:00 to 19:00 in summer, timed-entry slots keep the flow moving, and last admission is an hour before close. The brightly lit themed rooms hold Berlin-history and film sets, the wax figures posed at arm's length with no barriers.

Futurium (by the Spree, near Hauptbahnhof) is free and 15 minutes' walk north of the gate. It opens 10:00 to 18:00 on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and until 20:00 on Thursday. The dark top-floor exhibition is built from lit models and screens, there is a hands-on lab in the basement, and the Skywalk deck sits on the roof of the angular grey glass-and-steel block.

Dussmann das KulturKaufhaus (Friedrichstraße) is ten minutes from the gate, free to enter, and open until midnight Monday to Friday and 23:30 on Saturday, with only the BerlinShop trading on Sunday. Five floors of books and vinyl wrap a glass atrium with a living green wall and escalators climbing through it. The KulturKafé tables on the second floor take walk-ins.

What you pay and what to book

Nothing on Pariser Platz sells a ticket, so a guided walk is the one cost at the gate itself. The walks run seven days a week and book up steadily, so reserve a place in advance. The Reichstag dome and the Käfer dining room both want your name filed before you travel, and the Bel Etage sittings need a reservation. Madame Tussauds is cheaper booked online. The Humboldt Forum terrace and the Victory Column sell on arrival.

Best time to go

Every room around the gate opens later than the square does, which leaves the first hour of daylight to the monument and the paved space in front of it. On Tuesdays the Humboldt Forum terrace and Futurium are both closed, and the Akademie der Künste gives free admission to its exhibitions on Tuesday afternoons. The memorial's information centre closes on Mondays and on 24 December.

Winter shortens three of these stops. The silence room closes at 17:00, the Victory Column runs 10:00 to 17:00, and Madame Tussauds moves to 10:00 to 18:00 from November. The column platform shuts in high wind, and the Humboldt Forum terrace can close at short notice in ice or snow.

Two 2026 dates change the plan outright. Pariser Platz is fenced for an event on 12 September 2026, and the Reichstag's maintenance closures run from 19 to 30 October 2026. Each October the gate becomes a projection site for the Festival of Lights. Afternoon tea at the Adlon breaks for the summer, and service resumed on 3 September 2026.

Is it worth it

It suits a visitor with a spare hour and no ticket budget, because the square, the silence room, the information counter and both memorials are free. Anyone who wants the gate from above has to plan weeks out, since the dome and the parliament restaurant admit you only on a name registered in advance.

Before you go

Work the week around the closed days: Tuesday shuts two viewpoints, Monday shuts the memorial's information centre. Book the Reichstag dome, the Käfer tables and the Bel Etage sittings before you fly. See the Berlin guide and the Berlin hotel search.

Prima di partire

Do you need a ticket for the Brandenburg Gate?

No. Pariser Platz is a public square with no door policy, free and open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The gate has no interior to tour, so the only thing you can pay for is a guide, and guided walks run seven days a week.

Can you go inside the Brandenburg Gate?

Yes, into one room. The Raum der Stille in the north gatehouse is a free silence room, open daily 11:00 to 18:00 in summer and 11:00 to 17:00 in winter, with a dozen seats and no photography. The south gatehouse is the Berlin Tourist Info Centre, also free to enter, open daily from 09:00 or 10:00 until 18:00.

What is the best view of the Brandenburg Gate from above?

The Reichstag dome, free and open daily 08:00 to midnight, last entry 22:00. You have to register through the Bundestag Visitors' Service, which opens three months ahead and wants every name and date of birth, and staff check photo ID on arrival. Maintenance closes it from 19 to 30 October 2026.

What if the Reichstag dome is fully booked?

Book the Käfer Dachgarten-Restaurant on the Reichstag roof instead, where a breakfast, lunch or aperitif reservation includes roof and dome access under the same security rules. For less money, there is the Humboldt Forum Roof Terrace at €3, €1.50 reduced, or the Berlin Victory Column at €4 to €4.50, cash only.

Is the Brandenburg Gate ever closed off to visitors?

Pariser Platz gets fenced off for events now and then, and one closure is already set for 12 September 2026. Each October the Festival of Lights projects onto the gate.
